with typical 'T'-frame, the boxwood arc divided to 90°, index arm with ivory-edged fiducial reader, brass pinhole sights, two interchangeable shades and mirrors -- 26½ x 22in. (67.5 x 56cm.)

Edward Nairne was established as an instrument maker by 1749. In his long and distinguished career he had many apprentices who became significant manufacturers in their own right - not the least of whom was Jesse Ramsden. Working from several addresses he seems to have retired in 1796 and died in 1806. In 1774 he co-founded an important partnership with Thomas Blunt which was to survive until he retired.

Condition Report
The signature is hard to read but present nevertheless. Scale has wear at two or three points, probably where it was handled most during use, as the principal sections remain in good/sharp condition. I cannot see any particular evidence of the scale being "rubbed down", although it would be surprising if it had not had wax applied to it at some point in the past.
